Matthew 4:1-11 NKJV
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
WHEN TO EXPECT TEMPTATIONS
Of course, the journey of life is challenging, there are two sides to it. You either be on the Lord's side or on the devil side, there is no sitting on the fence (you cannot serve two master. Its either you are hot or you are cold, there is no lukewarmness).
Temptation has been defined as the desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise. (Dictionary). God does not tempt. Temptation is of the devil and falling into his temptation is sin. Note this, the devil does not tempt people who are already on his side, why should he tempt sinners to fall into sins when he is already a sinner?
As it has been said, there is no sitting on the fence in the journey of life (either you are on the Lords side or not), if you are not on the Lord's side, you shouldn't expect temptation because you are already a sinner. Therefore my brethren, the moment you make up your mind to forsake the world and be on the Lord's side is exactly the moment you register for temptation courses before the devil. Do not be scared though. There are so many ways out of his craft......winks. Let's talk about these two today
HOW TO OVERCOME TEMPTATIONS
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death (Revelation 12:11 NKJV).
1. BY THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB
Jesus is the Lamb of God, the greatest sacrifice for the entire human race so that we can have confidence, through the blood of Jesus, to come to the presence of God as His sons and daughters (Hebrews 10:19, 2 Corinthians 3:4).
This blood has been shed for us. whenever our weary steps falter and we fall into temptation, we can plead the blood of Jesus, our sins will be blotted out and we can be on the Lord's side again (Grin). But this does not mean we should continue falling into temptations deliberately, GOD FORBID (strong face). Romans 6:1-2
2. BY THE WORDS OF THEIR TESTIMONIES
This is what Jesus clearly demonstrated in Matthew 4:1-11. The moment it was time for Jesus to begin His ministry, He fasted and prayed and that's when the devil came. But Jesus overcame him by the WORDS (it is written).
See the craftiness of the devil, when Jesus resisted him with bible, the very first time (read verse 4), then the devil presented the second temptation with a bible verse too (read verse 6), oh my God, at this point some people will fall but because Jesus is loaded with the word, He simply countered the devil with another Bible verse, this time around Jesus said "it is written again" (verse 7). Finally, Jesus resisted him the third time with the word "it is written" and Satan left.
Now unto You and I, for how long are we going to be pleading the blood of Jesus because we keep falling into temptations. I think this is the best time we start using the WORD OF GOD to overcome the devil. The bible says "resist the devil and he shall flee....James 4:7".
It is written, it is written again, it is written. what is written? where exactly is it written? or how do we know what had been written? The answers to these questions is the Bible, you can only know what is written, where it is written only if you open your Bibles. If you do not have the Holy Book there are Bible apps all over the Internet, download Bible apps and pray that the Lord should lead you when you read.
DAY BY DAY BIBLE STUDY (not talking about this blog right now........smile) is enough for you, with the help of the Holy Spirit to resist the devil.
dear Heavenly Father, the kind and Holy one, we thank you for the opportunity you have given us this hour to study about how we can overcome temptation, we are grateful for your words from which we studied from.
Father we humble ourselves before you this hour, whenever we study the bible, let Your presence be with us.
Give us the power from above to resist the devil and his temptations whenever he comes our way.
At the end of our journey in this life, we want to be able to tell the stories of how we also overcame the devil by the blood of Jesus and through your words.
IN JESUS NAME WE PRAY
